What is Art Psychotherapy?
Art Psychotherapy, also known as Art Therapy, isn’t about creating perfect artwork—it’s about creating space to connect with your feelings and make sense of them in a safe, one-on-one setting. Together, we’ll explore your thoughts and emotions through making art, using creative expression as a pathway to healing and self-understanding.
Art therapy uses creative methods like drawing, painting, and movement to help you work through life’s challenges. Unlike traditional art, where the focus might be the finished piece, here it’s about creating and what it reveals about your inner world. Each session aims to foster a caring therapeutic relationship with boundaries and direction, so you feel safe and empowered as we go on this journey together.
How Art Therapy Works at White Wolf
Art Therapy at White Wolf is like conversing with yourself through art, with me beside you as a guide. Juliet King, a leader in the field of Art Therapy and neuroscience, explains what makes this approach so impactful:
- The Creative Process: Just creating is healing—it can bring a sense of calm, clarity, and empowerment.
- Art Materials and Techniques: Different materials, how controllable they feel, help you express complex emotions that can be hard to put into words.
- The Therapeutic Relationship: Our connection is central to the process, helping you feel safe, heard, and supported as you explore your experiences.
In our sessions, we’ll tune into your reactions and responses to the art-making process. Maybe you feel frustrated while working with particular art materials—let’s look at that together. Was it a quick reaction? Did it linger throughout the session? Does it show up in the lines or colours on the page? Art therapy isn’t about analysing the art but exploring the emotions and memories it stirs. It’s a collaborative process where we gently uncover and work through what might be weighing on you. It also assists with practising mindfulness, being in the present moment, and, if you allow it, experiencing a flow state where you become fully immersed in what you are doing.
Art Therapy in Action
Art Therapy has the ability to go beyond words. It allows us to look at things from a different perspective, discovering parts of ourselves we may not fully see yet. Art Therapy is changing lives, and to see it in action, feel free to watch the documentary trailer below for an inspiring look at how creative therapy is used worldwide.
White Wolf Counselling is a caring space to express, explore, and find deeper self-understanding. Whether you’re processing past experiences, dealing with current struggles, or simply needing a space to be seen, heard and understood, I’m here with you every step. Together, we’ll make sense of life’s messy, beautiful, and sometimes tricky parts, using creativity as our guide.
How will I know if it’s for me?
How will I know if it’s for me?
Art Therapy is a great fit if you find it hard to talk about your feelings or if you’re dealing with complex emotions, trauma, or mental health challenges. It helps you connect with and creatively express emotions. You don’t need to be “good” at art—what matters is the process and the insights it brings.
Can we just talk?
Can we just talk?
Only some sessions will focus solely on art-making. Depending on what you need that day, I am guided by you. Some sessions may involve talking or other therapeutic approaches. Art will be part of the process, but we’ll adapt each session to suit your goals and comfort level.
